Memorial Day

Early this morning I got up and went running outside. I ran by the Provo Cemetery and it was so beautiful; really and truly breathtaking. There were so many flowers that the air literally smelled so fresh and sweet. At first I had this surge of energy emitting from within me because I was all pumped up from the scenery and flowers. It only lasted seconds as I was overcome with a new feeling. It's like all that energy was being sucked out of me and I found myself nearly crying. With eyes glazed over, I took off my earphones and slowed down to walk. My thoughts were focused on our country and families and freedom. I observed other families huddled around graves, couples holding hands, children holding flowers and tiny American flags. I was so in the moment. So in the moment I started to hear music. I thought my mind was drifting but as I looked up I saw 15-20 people walking in unison, and dressed in kilts as they played the bagpipes. It was a slow melody and played with so much respect. I felt tightness. I felt reverence. It really was a glorious moment for all of us who stood in the cemetery this morning.
On my way back, I was nearly sprinting. I wanted to get home as fast as I could so I could enjoy this beautiful weather and Holiday with my family. As I rounded the corner to my subdivision, I noticed the Boy Scouts had put up all the American flags in front of all our houses. They were fervently waving and I was PROUD and giddy even.
Today is memorial day, and although it unofficially marks the start of the summer vacation season, the holiday means much more than that. I'm not going to get on my soapbox and preach here, I just want all of us to remember that we sincerely owe the freedoms we enjoy to brave men and women who, since the days of the American Revolution, have given their lives to defend this country. If this Holiday means as much to you as it does to me then nothing can bring your 'patriotic high' down.

What a beautiful experience you had this morning. I wish I could have been there. I just love the bagpipes. We went to Grnndma Crocker's graveside yesterday and were overwhelmed at all the American flags. Grandpa Crocker asked Dad to fix two flags that had fallen down. Daddy and I have been very blessed to have grown up in military families and to have been taught about patriotism. I miss my Dad!
